The Homework Club began in 2012 as an extension of the OVCSP offering learning opportunities for single and double orphans in the communities we work with in Dar es Salaam. It provides a safe space and stimulating environment where children can come after school to study and receive help with their schoolwork.
The Homework Club looks to go beyond traditional teaching methods found in the schools. It looks to expose the children to new ideas and ways of learning that helps them understand the concepts they are learning in school and develop their creativity. Our ultimate goal is to assist children who do not have the support traditionally provided by parents to prepare for the national primary school examinations to gain admittance to government secondary school.
In 2012, the AC-AF team has focused on developing activities to improve students’ English reading and comprehension skills, as well as math, spelling, and geography. Physical activities have also been integrated into learning activities, using games to encourage children to view education as fun rather than a chore.
